One of our dedicated SPARK volunteers, Vickie Snoy, was recently awarded a Prudential CARES Grant. 

 

Retired Prudential Financial advertising manager, Vickie Snoy, of Keyport, N. J. received a Prudential CARES Volunteer Grants Award for the amount of $1,000 to bend fit Save the Park at Riverbank Friends Inc.  Since 1996, Snoy has advanced SPARK’s mission to preserve and maintain Riverbank Park in the city of Newark and to provided green space and activities in a densely populated portion of the city,  As a board member she assists in the planning and implementation of events and activities.  The park celebrated its 100th anniversary last fall.

2008 Essex County SummerMusic Concert Series
to Set the Stage in the Historic Essex County Park System

Essex County Executive DiVincenzo Invites Public to Experience the Hottest Acts in Jazz, Doo Wop, Rock and Roll, Reggae, Latin and More.

Essex County, NJ – Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. invites the public to attend the 2008 Essex County Free SummerMusic Concert Series. The Free Concert Series brings a diverse group of musicians and entertainers to perform at locations throughout the historic Essex County Park System. DiVincenzo noted that international entertainer Dionne Warwick will make her Essex County Concert Series debut Friday, July 11th.

This summer, spend your evenings attending our Free SummerMusic Concert Series throughout the Essex County Park System. We have a spectacular line-up that is sure to entertain and impress. Whether you enjoy oldies, jazz or the symphony, we invite you to enjoy the music and our scenic, historic parks,” DiVincenzo said.

The Summer Music Concert Series is being sponsored by Filippo Berio Olive Oil and Commerce Bank. Additional support is being provided by Hoffman LaRoche, New York Waterway and News 12 New Jersey. The series also is made possible in part with grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. Rose Squared Productions is sponsoring the two Fireworks shows.

The series kicks off with two performances by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra with two spectacular fireworks displays in Branch Brook Park on Tuesday, July 1st and Brookdale Park on Thursday, July 3rd. On Friday, July 11th, Essex County welcomes recording star and entertainer Dionne Warwick to perform for the first time on the Summer Concert Series stage in Brookdale Park. Over the eight-week schedule, 24 concerts featuring some of the hottest local and international acts in jazz, rock and roll, gospel, doo wop, big band, reggae and more will be featured.

Concerts are held at accessible sites. Persons who require special accommodations or assistance are asked to call at least two weeks prior to the concert to alert staff as to their needs. Admission to the concerts is free but there is a $2 parking donation for concerts at Essex County Brookdale Park in Bloomfield/Montclair. The Essex County Park System was created in 1895 and is the first county park system in the United States. It has been expanded to include about 6,000 acres of land. There are 18 parks, five reservations, an environmental center, a zoo, ice skating rink, roller skating rink, three public golf courses, golf driving range, miniature golf course, three dog parks and one castle.

Bring your camera to the park this Spring and Summer. Your photo may just win the 2008 Essex County Nature Photography Contest. Deadline for submissions is September 15th. Please call the Essex County Environmental Center at 973-228-8776 for contest rules.

Volunteers of all ages are needed and welcomed for a variety of activities at the park, from fund-raising, to outreach, to program planning and assistance.
